Cancer. The six letter word has impacted everyone in some way or another. Chances are you know someone who has been faced with Cancer, whether it be a neighbor, friend or family member. The fact remains that it's an unignorable epidemic and despite the technological advances that have been made over the past few years, the mystery associated with Cancer never seems to unravel. One probing question still remains on the minds and hearts of many: Is cancer a genetic mutation or the result of poor lifestyle choices?

There are various studies that indicate that both factors play a role on someone's diagnosis, but that's another story. Those who have been personally affected by the disease, particularly caregivers or those who has lost a family member to cancer are always on the “look-out” for new information that may help decrease their chances of getting cancer. Research is conducted everyday and some scientific evidence indicates that here are some behaviors and products that have been directly correlated with different types of Cancers. While nothing has been set in stone, it is never too late to begin adopting new habits that can potentially protect you from getting Cancer.

Besides leading a healthy lifestyle by incorporating a balanced diet and exercise program, here are 5 lifestyle tips that you can incorporate into your life- begin today!

1. Buy Natural Toiletries and Cosmetics:It's no "Secret"- buying products with less chemicals is a much safer alternative to the "pretty" commercial products that appeal to you when stock up on toiletries at the drug store. Rule of thumb: if you can't pronounce the ingredients- avoid it like the plague. You can start your transition to natural alternatives by choosing natural deodorant over antiperspirant. This one is very important for women because antiperspirant contains aluminum and other chemicals that literally stop your sweat glands from functioning and can lead to clogging of the lymph nodes which are directly associated with breast cancer.

2. Never microwave/freeze food or drink in plastic containers:When you freeze or microwave a solid or liquid in a plastic container, you are both physically and chemically altering the property of the food or liquid and plastic particles can end up infusing themselves into whatever you ingest! Opt for glass or ceramic containers! Same applies to water! Never leave water bottles in the car or drink water that has been frozen in plastic containers. While some think that this is a myth, I would rather be cautious than cancerous!

3. Don't Stress Out:Easier said than done! No matter what your occupation is, there are high levels of stress associated in every line of work. Make sure to take a "time out" and begin your day on the right foot by spending a few moments in meditation, reflection or prayer in order to keep yourself centered. Research has indicated that those who make a conscious effort to start their day this way can better manage their stress and potentially live longer lives.

4. Moderation is Key:Nobody is perfect. We are all human being-not robots. While it is important to celebrate all that life has to offer, it is even more important to do so in moderation. Even drinking water in excess is hazardous to your body so make it a point to live responsibly and identify any negative lifestyle patterns you may have overindulged in (binge drinking, over-eating, not enough/too much exercise, sleep deprivation, procrastination, etc) and make an effort to balance it out! Don’t be afraid to seek help if you feel that you can’t break bad habits and stay on the right track.

5. Add Antioxidants: According to the National Cancer Institute, some studies have shown that antioxidants may slow or possibly prevent the development of cancer. Some easy antioxidants you can add to your diet include brightly colored fruits including blueberries/cranberries/strawberries/boysenberries, acai berries (rich in Omega 3, 6 and 9 oils), pomegranates, red apples (rich in antioxidant flavonoids such as quercetin), Oranges/ Bananas/red grapes/mangoes and Kiwi (rich in antioxidants, Vitamins C, E, Magnesium, Potassium and Copper)
